Moth caterpillar solicits for homopteran honeydew
A life-history in which an organism depends on ants is called myrmecophily. Among Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), many species of lycaenid butterflies are known to show myrmecophily at the larval stage. Descriptions of myrmecophily among moth species, however, are very few and fragmentary. Here, we report the ant-associated behaviour of the tiny Japanese arctiid moth, Nudina artaxidia. Fie...
متن کاملBeware of the caterpillar: Anaphylaxis to the spotted tussock moth caterpillar, Lophocampa maculata
We present a case report of a 5-year-old boy with presumed anaphylaxis to the caterpillar, Lophocampa maculata, manifesting as the acute development of diffuse urticaria and progressive dyspnea. This reaction required prompt treatment with antihistamines and a bronchodilator. Allergen scratch testing with a homogenized caterpillar extract suggests that immunoglobulin E-mediated type I hypersens...
متن کاملTopical treatment of contact dermatitis by pine processionary caterpillar.
Skin contact dermatitis by pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is a public health problem of increasing significance. The authors present here the case of a 65-year-old man who was diagnosed with processionary caterpillar dermatitis. Patient was treated with topical potassium dobesilate 5% cream twice a day for 2 days. An improvement occurred soon after treatment.
متن کاملOutbreak report of airborne caterpillar dermatitis in a kindergarten.
BACKGROUND The oak processionary caterpillar is found in several European countries. The larva of Thaumetopoea processionea Lepidoptera from the third to sixth larval instar develops poisonous hair (setae), filled with an urticating toxin that could lead to serious dermatitis, conjunctivitis and pulmonary problems (summarized as lepidopterism) on contact. OBJECTIVES To determine the incidence...
متن کاملDistance-dependent aposematism and camouflage in the cinnabar moth caterpillar (Tyria jacobaeae, Erebidae)
Defended prey often use distinctive, conspicuous, colours to advertise their unprofitability to potential predators (aposematism). These warning signals are frequently made up of salient, high contrast, stripes which have been hypothesized to increase the speed and accuracy of predator avoidance learning. Limitations in predator visual acuity, however, mean that these patterns cannot be resolve...
